It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Michael Lozman, a cherished leader, visionary, and founder of the Capital District Jewish Holocaust Memorial. Dr. Lozman passed away on October 11, 2024, at the age of 86 in Albany, New York. His contributions to the preservation of Jewish history and Holocaust remembrance will continue to inspire generations to come.

A Legacy of Dedication and Service

Born in Brooklyn in 1937 to Eastern European immigrant parents, Dr. Lozman lived a life marked by service, compassion, and an unyielding sense of duty. After a distinguished career in Orthodontics, spanning over five decades, he turned his attention to preserving Jewish history, establishing the Restoration of Eastern European Jewish Cemeteries Project, and creating the Capital District Jewish Holocaust Memorial.

Dr. Lozman often reflected that he was “an ordinary person who had the opportunity to do extraordinary things.” His adventurer’s spirit and commitment to education led him to restore cemeteries in Belarus and Lithuania and organize student trips to historical sites like Auschwitz and Schindler’s Factory, teaching future generations about the importance of remembrance.

In 2018, he founded the Capital District Jewish Holocaust Memorial, and his leadership was instrumental in securing a two-acre land donation from Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, which helped bring his vision of a permanent memorial to life. As Dr. Lozman noted, “We have the Roman Catholic Church and the Jewish community working together on a project of such value. And that is an extraordinary moment.”

The Capital District Jewish Holocaust Memorial will be a legacy to his vision that will long endure.
